reproving Spontaneous Generation

we all know from 7th grade science class that the idea of spontaneous generation -- like trash turning into mice or rotting meat turning into maggots, was disproved in around the 1600s. duh. rotting meat doesn't turn into maggots - maggots lay their eggs in rotting meat and then the new maggots emerge from it.

but how, then, do you explain this, Francisco Redi?

ben is out of town at a wedding so he was not here to share this morning's experience with me.

there has been a singular fly buzzing around our apartment since thursday. last night, after seeing an AMAZING one-woman show (thank you marta!) called 'Wong Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest' (if you live in LA - go see it. it's friday through sunday nights this weekend through october 5th.) I got home, had some golden grahams, saw the fly buzzing, and went to bed.

this morning i walked into the kitchen and was greeted by a SWARM of flies. no joke it was a SWARM. they were on every surface in the kitchen, in the sink, on the stove, on the windows, one was even INSIDE my coffee pot, one was INSIDE the bag of 2 marzipans i bought last night (hooray leonidas for bringing back the marzipans!). everywhere. they were in the dining room, they were in the living room but mostly in the kitchen.

being a problem solver, i started spraying the whole house with some roach killer we had left over from our days on fairfax. but they just kept living. by the time i returned from rite-aid with some actual "flying insect" killer, about a third of them had succumbed to the roach juice. i doused the apartment in fly killer, went to change the laundry, and when i came back at least 3/4 of them were dead and twitching. after one more spraying, i am happy to say i have collected 39 dead black nasty fly corpses.

F you, flies! but where did you come from? will you be back?
