getting there...just 20 years too late

one of the best things about my santa monica library card is that i can check out 5 dvds for a week at a time - free of charge! lately i've been watching some eighties classics that either 1) i never saw as a kid or 2) i saw once as a kid and not since.

the film festival thus far has included:

valley girl - josie cotton as the prom entertainment singing of 'johnny are you queer?'. how did they get away with that? oh, right. it was 1983. in 1983 i took a breakdancing class at cochise elementary school where i learned a dance called 'the fag'. scary.

heathers - i saw this once in 8th grade at jen garber's house and not since. until this morning. the line "swatchdogs and diet cokeheads" has been with me all day.

sixteen candles -had never seen it the whole way through. xenophobia (nice gong sound!) plus what ben describes as 'one of the great rape scenes of our time' - when jake ryan puts his girlfriend in the rolls royce with anthony michael hall really got me larfin'.

Caroline: Who's he?
Jake: That's me.
Caroline: Who are you?
Jake: I'm him.
Caroline: Oh, ok.

man, that cracks me up.

thank god MAD MEN will be on in about 20 minutes! A little misogyny, homophobia and bigotry doesn't seem so bad coming out of the hot curves of joan holloway and the dapper coif of don draper. i LOVE that fargin' show.

joan, you could fire me any day of the week.

back in los angeles...

after a quick trip to ventura (about 1 1/2 hours north of la) on saturday ben and i stopped into the Tonga Hut - which is purported to be la's oldest tiki bar. it was pretty rad. they had carved easter island-style heads - ok - night at the museum style heads, (dum dum wants gum gum), and fruity bevvies. i had the "squirrel of paradise" which is guaranteed to make you squirrelly - per the menu. i biffed my jukebox selections by not realizing you have to pause between inputs - which resulted in some creepy trash metal interspersed with what i intended - sergio mendes and duran duran. the rockabilly lady at the bar was unpleased.

and a video

pippa's wedding in 8 photos

pippa married kyle a week ago and it was a wonderful weekend for everyone. she walked down the aisle to bright eyes' 'the first day of my life' and showed us that a wedding is not a party until you bring out the argentinian in everyone.

a new adventure in hair removal

Tom Decker has sugar in his mustache, too.

if you have ever met me, heard of me, or looked at my facebook profile you know that hair removal is one of my interests. and hobbies. and pastimes. and subjects.

so today while visiting the fam for the last time in coronado before they go back to the heat, i made an appointment to get my eyebrows and mustache did at la-di-da day spa. there are a few reasons why i wanted to go there
1. it's an aveda salon and aveda rules. the scent is like a time machine that brings me back to senior year of college.
mmm...aveda hair stick.
2. despite the gay name, it looked like the only place on coronado that's not for geriatrics - and estelle getty we miss you already.
3. they have "butt crack" on the menu. it's $15+. the plus is for if you're extra hairy.

but most importantly, la-di-da day spa specializes in sugaring - which is one h.r. technique i have never tried.

sugaring works like this: the aesthetician puts on latex gloves and rubs baby powder all over your mustache. (you can't do sugaring for brows because it's not precise enough). then she takes a warm ball of honey-colored substance (think amber silly putty about the size of a marble) and smooshes it on your mustache. over and over and you can feel the hairs coming out as she kneads it and rolls it on your mustache. this might sound unpleasant but it was fun and there was no - 'here comes the rip' anticipation. and when it's over, she washes off any remnants with water. no wax in the sides of my mouth, no breakouts on the way.

mailette (aesthetician and owner of the place) said that it's great for bikini - brazilian, playboy, however you fly. and it's all done with fingers, no sticks. she said it hurts less and it's faster than waxing. she said if i had time she'd do it for me. i should have taken her up on it but my mom was in the waiting room. maybe next summer?
